Nikon Coolpix L340 Digital Camera
The Nikon Coolpix L340 is Nikon's latest budget superzoom, packing a 27x zoom that gives you everything from a nice wide-angle for group shots to a zoomed-in telephoto for details or wildlife shots. Unsurprisingly, it's a fairly large and hefty camera, but is it a good buy if you're looking for a cheap but flexible model?
Within point and shoot cameras, the COOLPIX L340 is classified as a basic compact camera, which are designed to give users decent image quality (above that of a smartphone) with optical zooming capabilities at a reasonable price point.
They're one of the most portable options on the market as well, with the exception of ultra compact models. The Nikon COOLPIX L340 can take very high resolution photos at 20 megapixels. Megapixels, however, don't tell the whole story. Image quality is heavily dependent on a camera's sensor size as well. The COOLPIX L340 has a 1/2.3" sensor, which is a small form sensor that measures about 6.17 x 4.55 mm. This allows the camera to be portable, but won't be able to compete in image quality against cameras with larger sensors. For context, full frame sensors are about 36 x 24 mm providing a much larger area for image capturing. The difference in the image captured between a full frame sensor and a smaller one like this, is referred to as the crop factor. Lower crop factors (closer to 1) are better since more of the image is being received by the sensor.
